Wilhelmina couldn’t believe what she was hearing. This was supposed to be a luncheon for progressive Little Rock women! How dare Lucille say Brown v. the Board of Education was a “dangerous thing”! Weren’t they meeting in support of integrating Little Rock schools? She’d seen prejudice in Europe, which she was fortunate to escape by marrying her American Army officer in the late 1930s. And now, 20 years later she was getting ready to blow her top at the Little Rock Country Club. As she hastily stood up, she knocked over her glass of sweet tea, full to the brim, right onto her adorable new purse. No matter – it was modern new vinyl and would easily clean up with soap and a damp cloth. This mess brewing at the table was a different matter entirely
