In commemorating our 5th year Anniversary, ESSE Museum and Store’s latest exhibit “PURSEsonal Connections: Drawings by Betsy Davis” features original artwork from our book, What’s Inside? A Century of Women and Handbags. Davis, a graduate of St. John’s University in Sante Fe, illuminates the significance of the handbag by drawing inspiration from historical references and images. This historical thread runs throughout the museum as handbags and history align to create snapshots from each decade of the 20th century.
Of her experience creating the artwork, Davis says, “The best part of illustrating for What’s Inside: A Century of Women and Handbags was the attempt to capture the attitude and style of each woman from every decade. I tried to weave these drawings with wisdom and fun. I loved being a part of the world at ESSE- it’s a magically “real” place.” By incorporating handbags and decade-appropriate contents, Davis’ work captures the relationship between the fictional and factual text found in the book and museum.
The exhibit will open November 6th and run through January 27th, 2019. General Admission is $10 with Students, Seniors and Military receiving a discounted $8 ticket. Every Wednesday, ESSE offers half price entry to museum. Along with the museum, the store also boasts unique and one-of-a-kind handbags, jewelry and accessories from local makers to designers throughout the world. The ESSE Museum and Store is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am-4pm, and Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Private tours and rental are available.
